Graffiti from long ago or yesterday?

I've been wanting to find the glyphs near Reno for a while now.  So yesterday we spent the
day out in the Nevada outback in search of what is thought to be one of the largest rock
art sites in the western United States.  Here me and my brother stand next to a large plate
of seemingly authentic petroglyphs.

Here is CeCe squinting and trying to keep cool.  She got a little overheated yesterday I think.

I think we saw about 75 wild horses along the way.

CeCe again.

Despite this, we remain sceptics...but I want to believe.

Cece checking out one of the more recognizable glyphs at the site.

Another nice glyph thought to represent a lizard.

Hopping along the rocks we came across one of the nicest looking Collard Lizards I have seen yet.

Earlier my brother saw something wierd from the truck as we wheeled along the trail so we stopped.
What he saw turned out to be a strange looking stump, but his seeing this lead me over to spot where
I found a pristine horse skull, fully intact with all teeth and lower jaw.

And then there was this poor horse that looks to have maybe fallen down the mountain to an untimely death.

And this is why we could not help but doubt many of the "glyphs" we saw.  This cyclopean-octopus like
drawing did not look like it belonged with the rest of the work there, not to mention, its a glyoh of an octopus
with one eye.  Most of the original looking glyphs seemed to be hammered into the stone, whereas the fake
stuff was scratched.  Supposedly this site (as well as many others in Nevada) have had serious problems
with vandalism and theft, which is sad, but not at all surprising.

Most of the real stuff looked like this. Lots of dots and squiggles and lines.

Here is Linda with a large group of glyphs near the top of the mountain.  Supposedly the site consists of
80 acres of glyphs.  I think we only saw a very small portion.  I would like to go back when it is a little cooler
out and see if we can see more.  The afternoon heat got us all pretty exhausted and dehydrated in a very
short period of time.

Here is Beej thinking about some new tattoos.

This was one of the only human form glyphs we saw.  Who knows if it was real or fake?

So it was a long and hot, but most enjoyable day long adventure.

  1. WOWOWOWOWOW!!!! What a great piclogue! I can understand your skeptism, but some of it is real! Right?!?!?!

  2. Yeah, I think the vast majority of the stuff is authentic, but some of it is obviously modern. Yeah, 2 complete, gorgeous skulls in one day is totally awesome. Linda actually said "we need to set a limit as to the amount of dead things you are allowed to have in the garage" :) I should go back and claim the neck and spinal column from that fallen horse so I can articulate it into a nice, big sculpture. Yes, Linda owns several pairs of denim trousers, she just gets all dressed up extra special for you guys when she goes to Doll cons. :) Jeans and a t-shirt is actually a more typical Linda outfit I would say.
